Cyber Security: How to Protect your Computer from Malware

By | April 11, 2018

Cyber Security stands for the various technologies which are used to protect computers, programs, data and networks from exploitive cyber attacks and unauthorized access. PC security aims at securing PCs on private and public computer networks. It helps in restricting unauthorized and illegitimate access which can potentially infect the system. Cyber security is of paramount importance so as to prevent any alteration and damage caused by malicious threats. Cyber security encompasses four areas i.e. application security, information security, network security, and disaster recovery.

In the present connected world, protection from cyber attacks benefits everyone. On an individual level, a cyber attack may result in things like identity theft, cyber stalking, online fraud, loss of important data, etc. In the year 2000, a computer worm ILOVEYOU, also known as LoveLetter, attacked millions of Windows PCs. Created by hackers in Philippines, this seemingly harmless email contained an attachment which was laced with Philippines. It is reported to have infected roughly ten percent of the network computers in the world. This malware attack caused an estimated damage of 15 billion dollars. After the recent wannacry scare, protecting your computer from malware has become very essential.

While there are a number of security programs available in the market, here are some additional ways to keep your PC secure from Malware:

  1. Keep your network secure

In order to protect your system from malware, it is crucial to first keep the network secure. Starting with securing your home network will be a good decision. It is essential because a secure network will not only protect your personal computer but it will also protect all the other devices that are connected to the home network. Do not use the default password supplied by factory as they are easy to hack. Ensure that your network router is protected by a password which is unique. Install a firewall on the entire computer and make sure that it is running all the time. Firewall prevents unauthorized access.

  1. Avoid opening spam

Emails are a common way by which your computer can get infected with malware. Hence it is highly recommended that you keep yourself distanced from spam. Do not open emails that come from untrusted sources. IF you do open them, do not download the attachment or click on the link provided in the email. Using a good spam filter will be highly beneficial. While browsing online, you may also encounter pop-ups. While they are definitely annoying, they can also contain malware. No matter how enticing the spam or pop-up offer may be, do not click on it.

  1. Use a firewall

Firewall is software or hardware based security system which monitors all the outgoing and incoming network traffic. Using a firewall on your computer system will help in blocking malicious cyber attacks. Firewall software aims at protecting computers and networks from malware attacks. Firewall prevents transmission of malware with the help of packet filters.

  1. Install Antivirus software

An updated antivirus software protects the computer from malware in the most effective manner possible. Even if your computer system is free from malware, you must install antivirus software in order to protect it from future malware attacks. Antivirus application gives real time protection, thus detecting threats on a real-time basis. Antivirus software detects and removes malware by regularly scanning the system to expose any threat. Just installing an antivirus program and forgetting about it will not protect your computer from the latest threats, you need to keep updating it.

  1. Use strong and unique passwords

Recently, an email containing a “resume” for jobs was wreaking havoc by infecting users with malware. The email contained an application form which was in reality malware software whose purpose was to steal passwords. To protect yourself from password attacks, use passwords which include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Avoid using the same password for all of your accounts. Each password should be unique and long.

You can protect your computer system and network from malware attacks and other cyber threats by installing a latest and updated antivirus software on your computer.
